Knock me over with a feather. Microsoft’s new Windows, Windows 8, is for mobile computing only. Specifically Win 8 embraces the tablet. The mighty Microsoft is betting the future of computing is with tablets you can take anywhere. That has marketers buzzing. Now that almost everyone owns a smart phone, computers are no longer primarily for work. These days when people reach for a computer, it’s most likely a smart phone and they are probably using it for personal communication, play, and entertainment. If you want to advertise to those folks, you had better embed your message in a Youtube video or on a Facebook Timeline. Or text it or email it — or– go back to the decades old marketing method of CALLING people on their smart phones. What has marketing experts really thinking is the idea people are using computing on the go. That means tailoring your marketing message to fit with whatever the prospect is doing — driving, working, eating, playing sports, watching TV, and whispering sweet nothings.Add to that the intense filtering that is going on in business today. Marketers take notice of a prospect’s preferences, habits, and behaviors — then craft an ad campaign to fit snugly with what the prospect thinks, feels, and believes. Marketers worry very soon people won’t pay attention to your ad message unless it has been tailored to their individual world view. What does this mean for you?* Your site should be viewable from phones, tablets, right on up to big computer screens. After years of coding my site in old-fashioned HTML, I switch to a design that automatically adjusts itself for any size phone or computer.* In one year tablets will out number smart phones. That means many people seeing your site will be using a touch screen rather than a mouse.* Segment your marketing. Personalize messages for individuals and lifestyle groups. Watch for one size fits all marketing to lose its effectiveness. The more things change the more they stay the same. Our world still seems to have a shortage of companies who can get the job done right and do so at an affordable price. Offer high quality service and customers will find you one way or another. And finding you one way or another rather than on one BIG popular site is something we’re going to have to get used to. Increasingly people like to find their favorites on their own. They don’t particularly like having a central site or accepted expert tell them what they should like or trust. All this points to classic values leading toward success. Do what you love, love what you do, and show equal appreciation for your customers. Your quality and customer service will shine through in an age where everyone wants your kind of commitment.
