There are many reasons why some folks leave high school before graduating. Some were required to quit due to family financial hardship and the need to get a job and contribute, while others left because it was either too difficult or not challenging enough. If you have a similar history and feel the need to improve your employment opportunities through education, then you need to acquire a GED or HS equivalency. The General Educational Development test, or GED as it is commonly referred to, consists of five (5) tests in specific subjects, and all of the testing is done in person. Once you have successfully passed this group of tests, you will be certified as a person who has high school level academic skills. A GED is widely accepted by employers looking for entry-level candidates. The GED has a lot of mileage as it first appeared at the end of World War II as a way of helping returning soldiers who did not finish high school prepare for employment. Today we primarily recognize it as an educational replacement for those who did not graduate from high school. No matter what the reasons are for taking the GED tests, since the program’s onset, millions of people have earned one.In fact, it’s more common than you would think as many Americans have a GED in lieu of a high school diploma. Even more encouraging to those who aspire to higher education, you would be surprised to learn that some college students earned a GED. So you see, by taking this step on the educational ladder, there is no reason why you cannot continue on and earn a college degree. As earlier stated, the test consists of 5 different subjects which are: Language Arts, Social studies; Science, and Math. The cost of taking the test varies state to state and could be free or cost up to one hundred dollars. In most states, a passing grade equals 410 on each individual section as well as an overall average of 450. However, if you fail one or more sections, you need only retake the ones that you failed and you will have two years with which to do so.The GED is not without controversy as experts disagree about the test’s content as being too easy, or to other experts, too difficult. The understanding is that the current designer will be forming a new organization called the “GED Testing Service”. It is projected that a number of changes are going to occur. One of the more obvious and logical changes will be a computerized format projected to happen by 2013. Also important to note is a change to a more difficult content with certain questions given more points value. And finally, there will be a change to include two levels of testing, one for high school equivalency and job readiness, and another for entering college.
