Originally, the plant was planned to open for operations in 2011, but financial difficulties pushed the date back to sometime in 2013. The plant site is located about 70 miles southwest of Phoenix, in Gila Bend, Arizona. It will be built and operated by the Abengoa Solar Company. The capacity of the plant will be 280 megawatts, enough to power about 70,000 homes.Arizona is the fastest-growing state in the union, with peak energy demand in Arizona hitting a high of about 7500 megawatts last year. This figure is growing at a rate of about 1.5% every year. The Solana Project aims to reduce Arizona’s dependence on fossil fuels and other non-renewable resources. The Solana Project will meet the following urgent needs:
Energy independence for the whole state of Arizona.
Reduce the amount of money spent annually on energy being imported from other states.
Increases the use of instate resources for energy creation and efficiency.
Help Arizona meet the 15% renewable energy standard.
The solar energy generating plant will be quite large. It is going to be covering about 2,000 acres, and will employ about 100 full-time workers. During the construction process, the plant will create thousands of temporary construction jobs, boosting the employment rate in Arizona. The plant is projected to yield approximately $1 billion in private investments, as well as $300 to $400 million in yearly tax revenue. Not only will be efficient in costs but it is going to be helping the state of Arizona in this economy which having a job is a blessing. The plant is also specially designed to be more conservative in water use than many of the other solar plants that have been built in the past. Phoenix’s solar energy needs will be met by using this energy and contributing it throughout the city. Phoenix is one of the largest cities in Arizona. It is very populated and the need for power is great. There isn’t much “go green” in the desert and having this generating plant will start a trend of solar energy that hopefully with venture out to personal homes throughout the state. That would make Arizona a very green state, where there isn’t much “green”.Many people living in Arizona are awaiting the construction and opening of the Solana Generating Plant. Hoping it gets finished on schedule in 2013, people living in that area will get to see a new type of energy plant as well as see it benefit their state.
