Some might think it is inappropriate to list your fantastic positive attitude on your resume, but I disagree. As a former employer and as the founder of a franchising company I can tell you that positive employees with a good attitude are worth their weight in gold. Now then, there is a right way and a wrong way to write this up on a resume, and it is very difficult to convey the spirit of a positive attitude on a two-dimensional piece of paper representing your past work history, experience, and educational knowledge base. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try, or make renditions and upgrades to your resume as appropriate, especially for the new year in 2003. Okay so let’s talk shall we?You see, an employee with a bad attitude can poison the entire office, or destroy the productivity of the work crew. Someone with a positive attitude, someone who has the team spirit can help that group work better together accomplishing more, and therefore that increase in productivity translates to future profits for the company. If you are sending your resume to a human resource department of a large corporation they are well aware of this. Likewise, if your resume is going to an owner of a small business with let’s say 50 or less employees, they also know this, but at an even more personal level. If you explain on your resume, in as few words as possible, that even if you lack of the skills of the top players in the company, you surely make up for it in your positive attitude, and your willingness to learn and strive for success. If your future employer knows that you will be motivating the team, keeping the peace, and rallying the troops then chances are you will get the job over someone else with a similar skill set and knowledge base. That’s how I see it, and as a former employer it is something that I always looked for.Still, I wish to warn you not to over embellish your fantastic positive attitude, rather to mention the fact prior to the actual interview. If the person doing the decision-making in hiring sees that you really do have a positive attitude, and it is even more noticeable than mentioned on your resume, your chances of getting that job are greatly increased.Often, I will see on resumes “works well with others” but in reality what does that really mean? Not much. Instead, you might consider “having a perpetual positive attitude,” and “enthusiastically into teamwork.” Indeed I hope you will give this some thought as you prepare your resume or 2013.
