In addition to job titles directly related to engineering, engineers work in numerous areas. These areas benefit from the expertise and mind-set that engineers bring to the job. Some of these related areas include the following.
Marketing and Sales
Sales engineers or technical representatives sell complex products and services that require a technical background to understand the product and the customer needs. Applications engineers are the technical experts who support the product, make recommendations for further development and/or improvement of the product, or develop applications for the customer.
Occupational specialties are named according to the technology with which they are most closely associated (e.g., chemical engineer, mining engineer, biomedical engineer). They may also be associated with the system or product
that they engineer (e.g., control systems design engineer). Manufacturing engineers specify how the product will be produced. Production engineers design the production scheme. Reliability engineers work in both the product development and manufacturing stages to ensure that the product performs as it was intended. Field engineers are also involved in production activity when employed by consulting or technical services companies, such as contract construction firms. In these settings, field engineers may set up the plant or facility.
Process engineers are involved in maintaining, enhancing, and developing processes that support the overall engineering processes.
Research engineers conduct basic, systematic investigations leading to new knowledge for a specific application. Development engineers, working with the research team, design, construct, and test prototypes and models. This
can include setting up and operating pilot plants.
Information Systems Processing
Software applications engineers analyze, design, develop, and implement systems and networks central to the company or organization. Systems analysts examine the overall informational needs of the company or organization and design or recommend computer systems and networks that will address those needs.
