As we head back to work and slowly get back into the swing of things for 2013, many web designers find themselves dreading the year ahead, fearing that it will turn out exactly like 2012. Just remember that it’s never too late to make New Years resolutions that will make this year the best one yet. Here are 5 resolutions that designers could find extremely valuable:
Find interesting and appropriate fonts for your projects
At the moment, the fonts used in websites are pretty mainstream. Instead of limiting yourself to a handful of fonts that have been deemed “web safe”, however, you should explore and see what else is available. You just might find your new signature font.
20% of your clients will cause 80% of your issues – get rid of them
More often than not web designers will find that a few of their clients are constantly causing issues and headaches. The best advice that we can offer you is to get rid of them – the time and energy that you’re putting into dealing with these people can be better spent.
Stop following design trends and use appropriate elements
Ask yourself how many times you’ve ended up using a design element in a project simply because you’ve been seeing it everywhere – you need to stop doing this and instead use elements because they are appropriate for the job at hand. You’ll receive much better results.
Stop stealing from other web designers
Most web designers will be guilty of doing this at some point or another. When you see something that you absolutely love, it can be very tempting to borrow and tweak it for your own work. Whilst it’s fine to take inspiration from others, avoid taking their whole project.
Strike a balance with the use of social media
Do you spend a large portion of your day sitting on your social media accounts, or do you spend hardly any time at all checking up on your profiles? Neither of these approaches is good, as social media can be very useful for your job – you just need to strike a balance.
In part two of this article we will look at some other resolutions that it would be worthwhile for every web designer to make if they want to give themselves the best chances at success for 2013. If you have come up with some other New Years resolutions that you have made, perhaps you would like to share them with us so that other designers can benefit from them, too.
