Predictability is another plus when it comes to making your job teleworkable. Jobs where you don’t know what you’ll be working on from day to day—or even moment to moment—are difficult to do from any location. But they’re worse if you’re at home and discover you don’t have the documents you need to answer a question or an important client shows up at the office to see you and you’re not there.
Give some thought to your day-to-day job responsibilities. Do you usually know ahead of time what you’ll be working on the following day? Can you get access to key documents through your company’s computer server (or some other way)? Do you have the kind of job where you must be ready for anything—even international travel—at a moment’s notice? Do you work in a service industry, like law or medicine, which often requires an immediate response to client demands or patient emergencies?
