The UN theme for International Women’s Day 2013 is: “A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women”.March, 8th is International Women’s Day. Do we need a special day like that?Well, you and I may not really need it, but… there are more than 3 billion women and girls in the world. Many of them are suffering, suffering badly, or are not enjoying freedom and wealth. They are suffering from poverty, even starvation, from oppression, from violence or from lack of education and/or opportunities.Every day women are losing children through famine or war, through lack of drinking water or medical help.Everyday girls or women are being raped, beaten or even killed. All over the world! There are women who have to endure oppression and violence day in, day out. Many women still have the badly paid jobs, or no job or career at all.Although opportunities for most women in the richer, developed countries still are not equal to those for men, I think that we are very blessed in comparison. So you wise and relatively wealthy women, I want to ask you: think about our sisters who don’t have it as good as we have. (At least on March, 8th.)Let us all find things we can do to help. Such as:· Write or talk to your politicians to ask them to always consider the position and needs of women in their (foreign?) political plans and decisions.· Give money to, and/or join organizations that are specifically helping girls and women.· Support your local shelter for (battered) women· You can give money or some of your time as a volunteer to help the girls or women near youI am sure you can think of more and better ideas that what we, the women who are better off, can do.Please do come up with those, and let me and other women know! This is the 21st century, and it is crazy that not all humans are equal, all over the world. The violence, and abuse has to stop, has to stop NOW.Every child has to get a good education, everybody has to have access to medical help, everybody has to have enough to eat and to drink.I hope that when March comes in 2014, we can look back and see that a lot of progress is made for women and girls everywhere.Have a very, very good International Women’s Day.
